Doctors are telling the family of football legend George Best that his hours are 'numbered'.

They said he had a very bad night in hospital where he is suffering from a lung infection and internal bleeding.

Doctors have told his family and fans that they must 'prepare for the worst'.

A spokesman for west London's Cromwell Hospital, where the former soccer star is back on a ventilator, said his condition had worsened and he was 'very, very ill'. Best has been in intensive care since Friday.

The former Northern Ireland and Manchester United star had a controversial liver transplant in 2002 after his liver failed following years of alcohol abuse.

The 59-year-old, who ignored pleas to stay off alcohol after the operation, was admitted to hospital on 1 October suffering from a flu-like infection.

Best won the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968 and was chosen as European Footballer of the Year the same year.

He appeared three times for Cork Celtic in the League of Ireland in December 1975 and also played for Fulham, Hibernians and LA Aztecs.
