Sunni chief shot dead in Baghdad

Police in Iraq have said gunmen shot dead a Sunni tribal chief and three of his sons at their home in Baghdad overnight.

Police said the attackers were wearing Iraqi army uniforms and travelled in army-type vehicles. But a Defence Ministry official denied Iraqi troops were involved and said the killers must have been terrorists in disguise.

The Sunni tribal chief, Khadim Sarhid Hemaiyem, was the head of the Batta tribe, according to his relatives. As well as his three sons, his son-in-law was also shot dead.

Both Sunni and Shi'ite religious and political leaders are regularly targeted by insurgents in Iraq.
