Doctors treating George Best in a London hospital have said the next 24-hours will be critical as to whether or not he is going to survive.

The former Northern Ireland and Manchester United star is said to be stable but in a dangerous condition.

Mr Best, 59, is on a life support machine and is being treated for a kidney infection.

His family have issued a statement to well-wishers saying the support from the public is giving them great strength.

He was admitted to Cromwell Hospital in west London last month but until recently his condition had been improving.

The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland footballer underwent a liver transplant three years ago following well-documented drinking problems, but embarked on a drinking binge within months despite vowing to stay dry.
