Following the launch of the book of estimates, the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, has announced that he is allocating an extra €146m to An Garda Síochána to spend on a new 14-point nationwide policing programme.
The money is to pay for the recruitment of 1,100 gardaí next year.
An extra €23m is to be spent on garda overtime, while 900 extra members of the new Garda Review are to be recruited.
Operation Anvil, which was set up to tackle organised crime, is to continue as long as necessary.
A further €5m is to be spent on Operation Encounter, which is a high visibility policing initiative to deal with public order offences.
The Garda Traffic Corps is also to be increased and more than 20 new high visibility, high-powered garda jeeps are to be purchased.
Minister McDowell has also announced the establishment of a new anti-graffiti and anti-vandalism campaign and 300 civilians are to replace 300 desk-bound gardaí who are to be sent back on to the streets.
