France - Decline in violence

There was a further decline in the level of urban violence in France overnight, with 163 vehicles torched and 50 people arrested across the country.

The police service said 27 vehicles were destroyed in the Paris area (compared to 60 on Monday night) and 136 elsewhere.

One police officer was injured during the arrest of a group of people throwing bottles of acid.

France’s national police service said today that 126 officers have been injured since the unrest first flared three weeks ago.

Yesterday, the French parliament backed a government request for a three-month extension of emergency powers it invoked to quell the wave of unrest. The vote in the National Assembly was 346 in favour to 148 against, with four abstentions.

The emergency powers allow authorities to impose curfews, order house arrests and searches, and ban public gatherings.
