Roadside bombs kill 11 in Iraq

11 people were killed by roadside bombs in Iraq today, while US-led forces killed around 37 insurgents near the Syrian border.

Two South African private security contractors were killed in the first roadside bomb attack near Baghdad’s Green Zone. Three others were wounded in the attack.

In eastern Baghdad, three people were killed and four more were injured when a bomb exploded in a busy street.

Six civilians died when a roadside device hit two passenger coaches in Ramadi, about 100km west of the Iraqi capital.

In Anbar, US and Iraqi forces began the latest phase of their operations to quell insurgents and foreign fighters. Following a series of air strikes, the forces moved into the town of Ubaydi, 20km from the border with Syria.

The US military said five targets were struck by the air strikes and an estimated 37 insurgents were killed.
