Iran calls for fresh nuclear talks

Iran - Denies US accusations
Iran - Denies US accusations

Iran's Chief Nuclear Negotiator, Ali Larijani, has written to Britain, France and Germany to call for the resumption of talks over its atomic programme.

The three European powers have led talks with Tehran on behalf of the EU.

Talks between Iran and the EU states broke off in August when Iran resumed uranium conversion activities in defiance of international calls to maintain a suspension.

Britain, France and Germany attempted to persuade Iran to permanently suspend uranium enrichment as a guarantee that its nuclear programme is peaceful.

But Iran insists its right to enrichment is enshrined in both the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and its additional protocol.

The US accuses Iran of using its nuclear power programme to develop nuclear weapons - a charge it denies.
