Moriarty probe given six months to complete

The Moriarty Tribunal, which has been running for eight years, is to be given another six months to complete its work, with a new end date of 30 June, the Taoiseach has told the Dáil.

Bertie Ahern said the Attorney General had advised that giving another six months to allow the tribunal finish its work was reasonable.

He said that so far the tribunal had cost his Department €21.3m, including fees paid to counsel for the tribunal. He added that it was impossible to estimate what the total cost would be.

Mr Ahern said so far the legal team had been paid just over €16 million.
