26 people treated after French E.coli outbreak

Twenty-six people in France are seriously ill after eating frozen minced meat contaminated with E.coli bacteria.

The French health ministry said 13 children under the age of nine have been affected by a potentially fatal complication linked to the E.coli infection.

It is known as haemolytic uremic syndrome - a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed and the kidneys fail.

The tainted meat was sold in a French supermarket chain.

E.coli is a bacteria found in cows' stomachs that can live in undercooked meat.
