Anglers and commercial fishermen met in Co Galway this afternoon to try to hammer out an agreement on the controversial issue of drift net fishing and salmon stocks.
They are members of the newly appointed National Salmon Commission.
It has been asked by Minister of State Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher to come up with a strategy to safeguard diminishing salmon stocks.
He wants the commission to report to him before March of next year when he has to set quotas for the 2006 catch.
Anglers are demanding an end to drift netting which they say is decimating salmon stocks.
Drift and draft net fishermen are opposed to any such move. They say they will co operate with conservation measures but want to be able to pursue their traditional livelihoods.
