At least 20 killed in Basra attack

A car bomb has killed at least 20 people and injured 40 in southern Iraq.

The bomb went off in a commercial area in the city of Basra.

Eyewitnesses say the bomber drove a car towards an Iraqi police patrol before setting off the device.

Six police officers were killed.

The area was crowded with people, celebrating the Muslim festival of Ramadan.

Earlier, reports from Iraq said a US military air raid has caused many deaths in the west of the country.

The US military said it had targeted what it called an al-Qaeda cell leader in an air strike near Karabilah, on the border with Syria.

Local doctors and tribal leaders have accused American forces of killing 40 civilians in the action.

Meanwhile, the US military has also said six US soldiers were killed in two roadside bomb attacks around Baghdad.
