The British mobile telephone company, O2, has agreed to a takeover by the Spanish telecom company, Telefonica.

Telefonica is paying almost £18 billion to get a foothold in Britain and Germany, two of Europe's largest mobile phone markets.

The companies said O2's business in Britain, Ireland and Germany would go well with Telefonica's businesses in Latin America and Spain.
