Iran has said it is standing by its commitment to the United Nations not to use violence against another country.

The comments come after international criticism of calls made by the Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, for Israel to be 'wiped off the map'.

In a statement, Iran's foreign ministry said the country was committed to its UN Charter commitments.

However, the statement went on to describe the UN Security Council's statement last night condemning Mr Ahmadinejad's comments as unacceptable.

The UNSC censure follows similar criticism by several countries as well as the UN Secretary, General Kofi Annan.

However, President Ahmadinejad has dismissed the criticism as invalid.
