19 killed in latest violence in Iraq

Iraq's Interior Ministry said that 19 people were killed in clashes between police, Shia militiamen and Sunni insurgents in the west of Baghdad today.

The Shia militiamen, from the so-called Mehdi Army, had asked police for help in recovering a comrade who was being held by the Sunnis.

It is believed the group was attacked by insurgents as they prepared to launch the operation.
