The funeral of the former Fianna Fáil TD, Liam Lawlor, took place in west Dublin today.

Several dignitaries were among the congregation at the funeral mass including the former Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds, and the Government Chief Whip, Tom Kitt.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, who is at an EU summit near London, was represented by his Aide-de-Camp, Commandant Michael Murray.

Hundreds of mourners packed St Patrick's Church in Esker near Lucan to pay tribute to Mr Lawlor, who represented Dublin West for more than 20 years.

In the homily, the 61-year-old was described as a larger than life character, an outstanding communicator and a great family man.

The celebrant said that Mr Lawlor was lively, full of fun and that no matter how difficult times were, he always found time to help others. Mr Lawlor was laid to rest at the nearby Esker Cemetery.

The former TD was killed in a car crash in Moscow in the early hours of Saturday morning. He had been on a business trip. The driver of the car was also killed and a Ukrainian woman was injured.
