Doctors treating the former Manchester United and Northern Ireland footballer, George Best, say he is 'very seriously ill'.

The 59-year-old was admitted to a private hospital in west London earlier this month suffering from an infection.

He underwent a liver transplant three years ago following well-documented drinking problems, but embarked on a drinking binge within months despite vowing to stay dry.

Earlier this week, Best's agent Phil Hughes said he was doing very well and his condition had improved.

But last night it appeared that his health had taken a turn for the worse. It was understood that he was suffering from internal bleeding.
