The Government is planning an investment of about €75 billion in infrastructure over the next ten years.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Finance, Brian Cowen, in Co Antrim today.
Speaking at the forum for All-Island Economic Co-operation in Templepatrick, the minister stressed the importance of what he termed 'an island approach to infrastructure investment'.
£16 billion has also been set aside for infrastructural development in Northern Ireland.
Other political speakers at the conference included Sir Reg Empey, Alasdair McDonnell, Jeffrey Donaldson and Mitchel McLaughlin.
It was thought Mr Cowen would praise the ideas on practical co-operation floated at a recent SDLP conference in Derry.
