France and the United States have demanded that Syria co-operate with a UN investigation into the death of the former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik al-Hariri.

The call, which has been supported by Britain, was made in a draft resolution circulated at the United Nations Security Council last night.

The draft resolution, which also threatened 'further measures' that could include sanctions, will be discussed at ministerial level next Monday.

Syria's Ambassador to the UN, Fayssal Mekdad, denied that his country was blocking the investigation.

Last week, German prosecutor Detliv Mehlis, who heads the UN investigation team, published a report finding the assassination of Mr Hariri was the result of collusion by Lebanese and Syrian security forces.

Yesterday, addressing the UN Security Council, Mr Mehlis said he had received 'seemingly rehearsed' answers from Syrian security personnel whom he had interviewed.

He also said his investigation team had received a number of credible threats.
