The Israeli army fired artillery rounds on Gaza tonight.
The attack followed the launch of two makeshift rockets by militants in response to Israel's killing of a top commander in the West Bank.
No casualties were reported.
The Islamic Jihad leader and another militant were shot dead in a raid by Israeli forces in the city of Tulkarem.
Israeli officials said Luay Saadi was suspected of masterminding two suicide bomb attacks that killed five people at an Israeli shopping mall in Netanya in July and another that killed five people outside a Tel Aviv nightclub in February.
The Israeli army said it launched the operation over fears Saadi was planning another attack and that he was shot dead in a gunfight as he tried to escape arrest.
The Palestinian Chief Negotiator, Saeb Erekat, described the two shootings as assassinations and said the Israeli operation threatened an already unstable ceasefire in place since February.
