Authorities in Nigeria say it is now believed all 117 people on board a plane that crashed shortly after take off from Lagos were killed.

A Red Cross spokesman said the plane was completely destroyed and there were no traces of any survivors at the scene of the crash, about 30km north of the city.

Earlier, a Nigerian spokesman said at least half of those on board the Boeing 737 had survived.

The plane was on its way to the capital, Abuja, when the crash happened. The pilot is understood to have issued a distress call from the aircraft minutes after take-off.

Emergency workers in Nigeria located the wreckage this morning. Several high-ranking Nigerian officials were on board the flight.
