Syria has denied accusations that it had not co-operated fully with the probe into the assassination of the former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik al-Hariri.

Damascus was responding to a UN report that implicated Syria in the car bombing last February and said that the Syrian authorities, after initially hesitating to help, had co-operated 'to a limited degree'.

The Syrian and Lebanese governments have denied any hand in the killing.

Mr Hariri, a popular figure opposed to Syrian occupation, was killed by a huge car bomb last February.

US President George W Bush has called for the UN Security Council to meet as soon as possible following the publication of the report.

Today, Syria's Foreign Minister, Farouk al Shara said his country might allow UN investigators to question Syrian officials.
