FAI seeks new Ireland boss

Brian Kerr - No new contract

A sub-committee of the Football Association of Ireland is beginning the task of choosing a new manager of the Republic of Ireland soccer team, after its decision not to renew the contract of Brian Kerr.

After a board meeting in Dublin last night, FAI chief executive John Delaney read a statement which said the board had looked at the results over the past two and a half years and noted the slippage in the team's FIFA and European championship rankings.

He said while the board recognised the passion and commitment of Brian Kerr and his coaching staff, the search for a new manager would be part of the process aimed at restoring the fortunes of the team on the international stage.

In his own statement last night, Mr Kerr thanked all involved in the Irish effort during his time in charge including players, managerial assistants, backroom staff and supporters.

He acknowledged the FAI decision but said he was disappointed.

He said he believed the decision was short-sighted and ran contrary to the core principles of the much vaunted Genesis report.

He said he had totally committed himself to serving the interests of Irish football and was deeply saddened that his relationship with the international game was at an end.

Mr Kerr thanked his assistant Chris Hughton and other staff along with every Irish player with whom he had worked.

He added that in the past few difficult weeks, even disillusioned supporters had expressed their dissatisfaction with courtesy and humour.

Sports Minister John O'Donoghue said Brian Kerr had made an outstanding contribution to the game at all levels.
