The EU Commissioner for internal markets, Charlie McCreevy, has defended legislation which he is trying to introduce to increase competition in the EU.

Mr McCreevy said Europe's economic performance had been ‘indifferent’ and faced serious challenges from China and India.

Mr McCreevy said if some countries continued to water down his legislation, there would be no point proceeding with it.
