Two in five of students who appealed their Leaving Certificate examination results have had their marks upgraded.

The State Examinations Commission said that more than 6,300 candidates in the June exams asked for examiners to re-check marks in over 11,500 papers.

Out of this total, over 2,600 results were upgraded and just five downgraded.

The students involved received the amended results today. They were also available online at www.examinations.ie.

Students may also opt to view their re-marked examination scripts at the commission offices in Athlone.

The figures relate to over 30 subjects at Higher and Ordinary level.

The subject with the by far the highest number of appeals was English, followed by Biology and Geography.

A further 58 students had their results upgraded even though they had not asked for their papers to be checked.

The State Examinations Commission said the work of each candidate was fully checked using the original marking scheme.

The re-marking is performed by a different examiner to the one who originally graded the work.

Anyone still unhappy with the outcome of their appeal can refer their case to the Independent Appeals Scrutineers.
