Turkey confirms first birdflu case

The Turkish government has confirmed the country's first case of bird flu on a turkey farm in the west of the country.

All birds in the village where it was discovered were slaughtered, and the area was disinfected to halt the spreading of the disease.

Officials have said that initial tests have identified the virus as belonging to the H5 strain of the flu.

Further tests will be needed to establish if it is the H5N1 strain, which has killed more than 60 people in south east Asia over the past two years.
