Former soccer star George Best is in a 'serious but improving condition' in intensive care after being struck down by an infection.
Mr Best was admitted to the private Cromwell Hospital in west London on Saturday suffering from 'flu-like symptoms. His condition deteriorated and last night he was transferred to the intensive care unit where he is being treated with antibiotics.
Professor Roger Williams said Mr Best, 59, had been 'severely ill' but was responding well to treatment.
The former Northern Ireland international had a liver transplant at the Cromwell in 2002. The immuno-suppressant drugs he has been taking since the transplant have made him more susceptible to infection, Prof Williams said.
In November last year he had a second operation to check on the condition of his liver and afterwards declared himself fit and healthy.
