Co Tipperary - Probe into Clonmel body find

Gardaí are treating as suspicious the death of a man whose body was found following a house fire in Clonmel in Tipperary.

He has been named as Fergus Roche, 30, from Haywood Close in Clonmel.

Residents in Haywood Close said the fire in the detached bungalow was first seen at some time between 5.30am and 5.40am.

The fire appears to have been confined to just one section of the bungalow.

Firemen brought Mr Roche from the burning house but he was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood the father of one lived nearby and was not living in the house where the fire took place.

RTÉ News understands there were no burn marks on Mr Roche's body but there are indications of at least one stab wound.

Gardaí immediately cordoned off the house and a major investigation has begun. A number of people have been interviewed but there have been no arrests.

A member of the State Pathologist's office carried out a post mortem examination this evening.

The results are likely to be made public tomorrow, by which time it is expected that the investigation will be upgraded a murder inquiry.
