Ryanair has sharply criticised the decision by the aviation regulator to grant Dublin Airport Authority a 23% increase in charges.

Michael O'Leary, Ryanair CEO, has raised the possibility of taking legal action over the issue.

The total cost of Dublin Airport’s ten-year extension plan is €1.2bn. This includes the €200m second terminal.

It was seeking a 50% increase in passenger charges to pay for it. However, the regulator only granted a 23% rise.

Mr O’Leary questioned why passengers should have to pay for new facilities from January when the facilities will not be opened for another two years.

He said the airport authority should sell its foreign assets and close its loss-making hotels to fund expansion.

His views clash with the Chambers of Commerce which expressed disappointment at the failure to grant a 50% rise.
