Centre-right parties win Polish election

Poland - Ruling left ousted in poll
Poland - Ruling left ousted in poll

Centre-right parties with links to the former Solidarity movement in Poland have ousted the left in the country's general election.

With 90% of ballot papers counted from yesterday's voting, the Law and Justice Party polled 26.8%, ahead of the Civic Platform on 24.2%.

The two parties are said to have already begun talks on forming a coalition government.

The vote is being seen as a major snub to the ruling left, who have been hit by scandal and have seen unemployment rocket to 18%, the highest in the European Union.

The polls are Poland's first since joining the EU in May 2004.
