The General Secretary of the Green Party has died suddenly.

Dermot Hamilton, who was in 48, was taken ill at home in Dublin this morning and died later in hospital.

The party’s pre-Dáil session which had been taking place today has been adjourned as a result.

Mr Hamilton had been appointed General Secretary of the Green Party in February. He had been a party member for many years and had been active in the constituency of its leader, Trevor Sargent.

Mr Hamilton was a native of Dublin and leaves a wife and daughter behind.

Trevor Sargent said Mr Hamilton had made an enormous contribution to the party as a member and later as General Secretary.

Earlier, the Green Party said it wanted to oust the current Fianna Fáil/PD alliance.

Mr Sargent said that regardless of who was in government the Greens needed to be there too for there to be real change.

Party chairman John Gormley said recent attacks on the party from Michael McDowell showed that the Justice Minister was deeply worried about the fact that his own party was now indistinguishable from Fianna Fáil.
