The Green Party has criticised the Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, for being informed about a leak at Sellafield last Friday but failing to inform the public.

Ciarán Cuffe said he was part of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Environment visit to the plant this week which obtained 'significant information' not given to the people.

He demanded Minister Roche visit Sellafield and 'look BNFL management in the eye' and always ensure information about leaks was released.

However, a spokesman for Mr Roche said the leak was 'minor' and all such issues were going to be brought up when he meets the British Secretary of State for the Department of Industry on 19 October.

The spokesman added the Minister had already issued several releases regarding problems at the plant and was working extremely hard on the issue.
