Judge Mahon - Tribunal could miss deadline

Lawyers for the Mahon Tribunal have told the High Court that it could have difficulty meeting an 18-month deadline to complete its investigations.

This follows a successful application by one of Anthony O'Reilly's companies to halt an investigation into a £30,000 payment to the former Minister Ray Burke.

Lawyers for Fitzwilton Limited told the High Court that the tribunal had already dropped this matter twice over the past seven years but now wanted to hold a hearing because of legal difficulties with the scheduled Quarryvale II module.

Mr Justice Barry White put the matter back until 10 October saying he did not see why it should be rushed through the courts.

Another module scheduled to hear allegations against the Cork developer Owen O'Callaghan is also on hold because of his separate legal challenge.
