About 150,000 children between the ages of six months and four years are to be offered a catch-up booster vaccination for meningitis, the Health Service Executive has announced.
A number of children have been hospitalised after developing meningitis, despite the fact that they had been vaccinated against the disease.
Last July, the National Immunisation Advisory Committee advised the Government to make booster injections available.
The HSE has said that parents of the children involved will be sent a letter informing them the vaccine is available and where they can get it.
A spokesperson for the HSE said that the campaign is due to start in November and will continue throughout the winter.
