Russia has asked the European Union to delay a move to report Iran’s nuclear programme to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told a meeting of EU foreign ministers that it was vital to maintain the unity of the international community to put pressure on Iran.

Britain, France and Germany had agreed with the US on Sunday to submit a resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency to report Iran to the UN Security Council.

The head of IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei, has called on Iran to allow access to sensitive sites involved in its nuclear programme, or face possible sanctions.
