At least 24 people have been killed and scores wounded on a second consecutive day of bomb attacks in Baghdad.

In one attack, 15 policemen were killed when a patrol was targeted in the south of the city.

There were two more attacks several hours later apparently aimed at Iraqi special forces, followed soon after by gun battles between police and insurgents.

More than 182 people were killed in similar attacks yesterday. Those attacks have been claimed by a group headed by al-Qaeda's frontman in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

The attacks occured as Iraqi leaders announced the completion of a draft constitution to be put to a referendum in mid-October after weeks of tortuous negotiations.

In the wake of the attacks, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said he vehemently condemned the use of terror and indiscriminate violence against civilians, which no cause or belief could justify.
