Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko has said he aims to form a new government within days so reforms in the ex-Soviet state do not lose momentum.

Yushchenko asked long-term ally Yuri Yekhanurov to form a new cabinet after sacking Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko yesterday amid infighting and claims of corruption among top officials.

'Our aim is to nominate the candidate for prime minister to parliament as soon as possible, vote, and form the government team within the coming days,' the Ukrainian leader said on his website.

Yushchenko today held talks with the parliamentary speaker, faction leaders and regional governors.

Parliament must confirm Yekhanurov if he is to take up his new post.
