Government spending remains behind target

Spending on public services and infrastructure by Government Departments is continuing to run substantially behind target.

This is despite the Exchequer continuing to collect significantly more than expected in taxes so far this year.

Official figures for August show Government spending is behind target by €918 million.

The amount the Government collected in taxes is €855 million above target for the first eight months of the year.

The Departments of Education, Environment, Finance, and Transport all registered underspends of more than €100 million each.

Sluggish spending on infrastructure and capital projects accounts for more than 40% of the overall underspending by Government.

The figures also confirm the Government is a major beneficiary from buoyant consumer activity and housing investment.
