Russian President Vladimir Putin has led a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of the Beslan school massacre, which began one year ago today.
Mr Putin said people throughout the world were remembering the attack which was carried out by Chechen separatists.
His remarks came as events got under way in Beslan to mark the anniversary of the tragedy which left 331 hostages dead, 186 of them children.
Earlier today, bells tolled throughout the town marking the moment when Chechen gunmen seized the town's School Number One and took more than 1,100 people hostage.
The tolling was followed by the playing of Mozart's Requiem at the site of the attack.
The walls of the school have been draped with red cloth decorated with white doves.
