536 moved from hospital beds says HSE

The Health Service Executive says 536 patients have been moved out of hospital beds to other facilities as part of the ten-point plan to relieve pressure on Accident & Emergency services.

However, 420 patients who have finished the acute phase of their treatment remain in hospital beds in the eastern region.

A progress report from the HSE says more than 100 home care packages, nursing home care and places in intermediate and high dependency care will be provided shortly.

The executive says 93 hospital beds are temporarily closed around the country due to refurbishment, infection control or other reasons, but not as a result of budgetary measures.

Figures produced by the Irish Nurses Organisation estimate that on average each day over 200 patients have been on trolleys in A&E around the country in the last week.

However, HSE figures estimate a lower total.
