The last Jewish settlers have left the Gaza Strip as an Israeli eviction operation that began five days ago draws to a close.

The residents of Netzarim boarded buses bound for Israel, vowing to return.

They were the last of 8,500 people in 21 settlements in Gaza to be evicted under a pullout plan.

Attention has now shifted to the West Bank, where four other settlements are being abandoned amid expectations of violent resistance.

Troops are heading to the West Bank for the operation, which is due to start tomorrow.

The evacuation plan has been praised by the United States. US Assistant Secretary of State, David Welsh, said Israel's withdrawal was an important opportunity to re-energise the peace process.

Meanwhile, a French television journalist who was abducted by three armed gunmen in Gaza City a week ago is reported to have been freed unharmed.

A Palestinian militant group said it helped to mediate his release. It remains unclear who abducted him.
