Dublin City Council has warned that the quality of water supplies for half the capital could be put at risk if the Roadstone company is granted planning permission to extract sand and gravel from land at Blessington in west Wicklow.
The Council has criticised the local authority in Wicklow for passing rather than deferring the Roadstone application until the question of illegal dumps on Roadstone lands 'had been resolved'.
In a letter to An Bord Pleanala, Dublin City Council said that Roadstone had not shown that the development would not affect water quality in the Poulaphouca Reservoir.
It directed the Bord's attention to the Water Quality Plan for the region which demands that all measures are taken to ensure Poulaphouca remains unpolluted and development around it be controlled.
