Talks on Iraqi constitution continue

Jalal Talabani - Hopeful of deal

Talks continued today in Iraq between the main political parties to try to reach agreement on the country's new constitution.

Iraqi politicians are said to be making slow but steady progress in their efforts to conclude negotiations ahead of tomorrow's deadline for Iraq's parliament to approve the document.

President Jalal Talabani had said he thought a deal could be reached on the draft document by today.

No early withdrawal of troops

US President, George Bush, has re-iterated that he will not pull US forces prematurely out of Iraq.

In his weekly radio address, Mr Bush said withdrawing US troops from Iraq would endanger Iraqi democracy and American security.

His comments came as a protest against the war in Iraq near his holiday ranch in Texas has entered its second week.

Several hundred people joined the demonstration yesterday organised by Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq last year.

Ms Sheehan wants US soldiers withdrawn from Iraq and has demanded a meeting with Mr Bush.
