Salva Kiir was sworn in as Sudanese vice president earlier today.

He faces the tasks of implementing a landmark peace deal and carrying on the legacy of his predecessor, John Garang.

The ceremony at Khartoum's Republican Palace was brief and low-key compared to Mr Garang's swearing-in, which was attended by foreign dignitaries.

Posters of Mr Kiir and his former enemy, Sudan's President Omar al-Beshir, were displayed in Khartoum.

Security was stepped up to guard against the kind of deadly rioting that rocked the streets after Mr Garang's death.

Mr Kiir has vowed to uphold peace in line with the deal signed last January, which ended a two-decade conflict between north and south Sudan.

It was Africa's longest running war, in which two million people died.

The peace process was interrupted by the death of Mr Garang in a helicopter crash on 30 July, just three weeks after he had taken office as vice president.
