The Dublin City Coroner, Brian Farrell, has called on the Government to bring forward an amendment to lift the restriction on the number of medical witnesses that can be heard at a medical related inquest.
The current restriction means only two medical witnesses can give evidence at medical related inquests.
Dr Farrell described this restriction as unwarranted and said it prevented coroners carrying out full and fair hearings at such inquests.
He said there was a constitutional imperative for fair procedure at such inquests which was being stifled by the rules. Mr Farrell said the rule was not in the interest of any parties involved in such inquests.
He was speaking as he adjourned the giving of a verdict on the death of a two-year-old haemophiliac boy in Crumlin hospital in October 2004.
The verdict has been adjourned until September.
