Sharm al-Sheikh - Probe into bomb attack

Egyptian police have exchanged fire with gunmen as they hunted for six Pakistanis suspected of involvement in the weekend bombings at Sharm el-Sheikh.

The firefight with Bedouin gunmen erupted in the mountainous interior of the Sinai peninsula some 30km from the scene of the bombings.

It came after police surrounded the nearby villages of Khurum and Rweissat in overnight raids.

Police earlier said they were looking for up to nine Pakistani nationals suspected of involvement in the triple bombings, which killed at least 64 people.

Pictures of the suspects have been distributed to police stations. Police said one of the suspects could have died in Saturday's blasts.

More than 70 people have been questioned.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the Sharm al-Sheikh bombers helped stage last October's attacks in the resort of Taba.

Officials believe the man who slammed his car into the reception area of a hotel may have been a suspect in the previous car bombings.

At least nine foreigners were killed in the blasts, which came at the peak of the summer tourist season and dealt a heavy blow to the vital revenue earner of the Arab world's most populous nation.

Pakistan has come under increased international pressure to crack down on Islamic militants after it emerged some of the bombers in the 7 July attacks in London, British Muslims of Pakistani descent, had recently visited the country.

Saturday's pre-dawn attacks, which analysts said were an attempt to destabilize Egypt in the run-up to the first-ever competitive presidential election just weeks away, were claimed by an al-Qaeda-linked group.
