Israeli aircraft fired two missiles at a car in the northern Gaza Strip wounding at least one Hamas militant.

All three militants jumped out of the vehicle after the first missile struck the engine. One of them was hit by shrapnel and rushed to hospital.

The air strike came amid an upsurge of violence.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said he had instructed the army to act without limitation to stop rocket and mortar salvoes from the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, used a special televised address to the nation to urge militants to halt their attacks on Israel.

Both sides have blamed each other for the latest series of attacks that have further threatened the existing ceasefire.

Israeli forces killed seven Hamas gunmen in air strikes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip yesterday, while Gaza militants killed a young Israeli woman in rocket barrage into southern Israel.

Thousands of opponents of Israel's planned withdrawal from Gaza are expected to march tomorrow in an attempt to halt the closure of the Jewish settlements and impede next month's pull-out.
