An estimated 15,000 people gathered in London's Trafalgar Square this evening to commemorate those who died in the London bombings a week ago today.

Earlier, millions of people across Europe observed a two-minute silence at midday in memory of the victims.

Buses and cabs came to a stop in London, and while tube trains continued to operate, the silence was announced on the underground network.

London's Mayor, Ken Livingstone, left a bouquet at King's Cross station which has become one of the focal points for floral tributes.

Members of the Irish Government and the Social Partners were among those in Dublin who observed the tribute.

The Taoiseach, the Tánaiste and the Minister for Finance were joined by the General Secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and IBEC's Director General at Dublin Castle, where they were attending a planned meeting.

Members of the Mayo Fire Service were among those observing the two-minute silence at midday. Firemen and administrative staff assembled at the fire station in Castlebar to join in the nationwide silent tribute to the victims of the London bombs.
