A hurricane that killed at least 22 people in the Caribbean has swept over the southeastern United States.

Hurricane Dennis caused damage to buildings and disrupted power lines in Florida, Mississippi and Alabama.

US President George W Bush has declared a 'major disaster' in the three southern states.

One person was killed on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale in southern Florida after being struck by a falling power line.

Officials in Walton County, Florida, said a young boy was killed on Friday when his parents drove into him while evacuating their home ahead of the storm.

More than one and a half million people had been ordered to leave their homes before the storm hit the Gulf coast.
