The people of Luxembourg have approved the European Union Constitution in a referendum held in the tiny state today.

Official results from the ballot show that 56.52% of people in Luxembourg, where voting is compulsory, supported the EU treaty while 43.48% voted against.

The Luxembourg government decided to proceed with today's referendum even though France and the Netherlands had rejected the constitution.

The result is a victory for Luxembourg's pro-European Prime Minister, Jean-Claude Juncker, who had indicated he would resign if the referendum was lost.

The referendum was also the first time an EU issue has been put to the people for approval in the country.

Last Wednesday, the Maltese parliament ratified the constitution in a unanimous vote.

Twelve member states have now ratified the document, but plans for referenda in six others have been either postponed or suspended.
