The Irish Farmers' Association has launched a new business, IFA Power, with the aim of driving down electricity costs to farmers.

The group electricity purchase deal, which will offer savings of 6% on domestic costs and 10% on commercial rates, is a first in the domestic electricity market following its full deregulation in February.

The electricity is to be purchased from Airtricity, an Irish-owned energy business, and is to involve the use of green energy.

Launching the deal, IFA President John Dillon said the IFA has a clear responsibility to help its members drive down utility and input costs wherever possible.

He said electricity is a major cost to the IFA's 85,000 farmer members and he called on them to support this new initiative, as the collective savings will increase as farmers take up the offer.
